How do I fix after transferring Dish DVR recordings to another Dish DVR?

Answer

Dish DVR recordings usually cannot be copied directly from one DVR to another like ordinary video files. On supported Hopper models, check Manage Recordings for Transfer to External Drive or use Dish’s supported whole-home / Sling options when available—true DVR-to-DVR file copy is generally not offered.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Formatting an external drive for Dish transfers can erase everything already on that drive.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the receiver model

Open the Dish menu and find System Info, Receiver Information, or the model label on the box/device. Note whether it is a Hopper, Joey, or another model.

You should see: You have the exact model name before looking for transfer features.

  2. Open Manage Recordings

From the Dish DVR menu, select Manage Recordings (wording can vary slightly by software version).

You should see: A list of recorded programs and management options appears.

  3. Look for Transfer to External Drive

If shown, select Transfer to External Drive and follow the on-screen prompts with a compatible USB drive connected. If that option is missing, your model or guide version likely does not support file transfer.

You should see: Eligible recordings begin transferring to the drive, or you confirm the transfer option is unavailable.

  4. Use whole-home viewing instead of copying

If you mainly need to watch the shows elsewhere in the home, check Dish’s supported Hopper/Joey or app viewing options for your account rather than trying to duplicate the DVR library onto a second recorder.

You should see: You can play the recordings on a linked receiver or official app path, or you know a true second-DVR copy is not available.

Extra tips

What to look for: Your exact Dish receiver model (for example Hopper with Sling), a Manage Recordings menu, and whether Transfer to External Drive appears.

Before you change anything: Write down the receiver model from the System Info or Info screen. Use a Dish-compatible external drive if you plan to transfer recordings. Do not format a drive until Dish prompts you and you accept that existing drive data may be erased. Keep the original DVR powered until you confirm what transferred.
