Why do new Dish Joey 3 receivers stay on Waiting for activation signal?

Answer

Waiting for activation signal on a Joey 3 usually means the receiver is powered and networked, but Dish has not finished authorizing it on your account yet—or the Joey cannot reach the Hopper/network path used for activation. Confirm cabling and power, wait through a full power cycle, then ask Dish to send the activation signal for each Joey’s receiver ID.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Ignore third-party sites or callers that ask you to pay extra to “unlock” a Joey activation signal.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm power and TV input

Verify each Joey 3 is plugged into a working outlet, the HDMI cable is on the correct TV input, and the front power indicator looks normal.

You should see: The Joey stays on and the Waiting for activation signal screen remains visible and readable.

  2. Check the Joey network path

Confirm the Joey’s Ethernet cable, coax/MoCA connection, or Dish wireless adapter is firmly connected the same way other working clients use. Reseat the cable and wait one to two minutes.

You should see: Link lights or on-screen network status improve, or you identify a dead cable to replace.

  3. Power-cycle Hopper and Joeys in order

Unplug the Joey(s), then unplug the Hopper/Hopper hub for about 60 seconds. Plug the Hopper back in first and let it fully boot, then plug in each Joey and wait several minutes on the activation screen.

You should see: The Joey either activates, advances past the waiting message, or still shows waiting with a stable connection.

  4. Record each Joey receiver ID

Write down the receiver ID or serial from the Joey label or System Info screen for every new unit that will not activate.

You should see: You have the IDs Dish Support needs to send an activation signal.

  5. Ask Dish to send the activation signal

Contact Dish Support, explain that new Joey 3 receivers remain on Waiting for activation signal, and provide the account and receiver IDs. Ask them to pair/activate each Joey and stay on the line while you watch for the screen to change.

You should see: Dish sends the signal and the Joey completes activation, or Support identifies a line/equipment limit or wiring issue.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact Waiting for activation signal message, Joey 3 model labeling, receiver ID/serial on the Joey sticker or System Info screen, and whether one or both new Joeys are stuck.

Before you change anything: Have your Dish account number and the Joey receiver IDs ready. Note how each Joey connects (Ethernet, MoCA/coax, or wireless adapter). Avoid repeatedly factory-resetting unless Dish asks you to. Do not share account credentials with unexpected callers offering paid activation help.
