How do I fix a cordless handset that rings but disconnects when answered?

Answer

This often means the spare handset is not fully registered to the base, or the base and handset need a power reset. Power-cycle the base and handset, then re-register handset 4 using the phone’s registration steps.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Use only the battery type recommended for the handset; incorrect batteries can damage the phone.

Follow these steps

  1. Power down the problem handset and base

Remove the batteries from handset 4, then unplug power from the main base station.

You should see: The handset is off and the base has no power.

  2. Wait, then restore base power

Wait about 30 to 60 seconds, plug the base back in, and let it finish starting up before restoring the handset batteries.

You should see: The base powers on normally with its usual ready lights or display.

  3. Reinstall handset batteries and retry a call

Put the batteries back into handset 4, place it on the charger or base until it shows a ready state, then try answering an incoming call and placing a test outbound call.

You should see: The handset stays connected after answer, or the Line in use / drop symptom remains.

  4. Re-register the spare handset

If calls still drop, use the base registration or pairing mode from your model’s manual and register handset 4 again. Deregister it first if the manual includes that step.

You should see: The handset confirms registration and can answer and hold a call without disconnecting.

  5. Repeat a longer base and handset reset if needed

If registration fails, remove handset 4 batteries for about 5 minutes, unplug the main base for about 1 minute, restore base power, reinstall batteries, and register the handset once more.

You should see: The handset syncs to the base and incoming calls can be answered normally.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Line in use message or icon on handset 4, whether the call drops the moment the handset leaves the cradle, and whether other handsets on the same base still work.

Before you change anything: Confirm you are using a spare handset that came with the same base system. Note any error icons on the handset screen before resetting. Have the model’s registration or pairing steps available if printed in the manual. Avoid cutting cords or opening the base unless the maker instructs that for battery access only.
