How do I stop a Yamaha P-155 keyboard from switching to Church Organ?

Answer

On a Yamaha P-155, an unintended voice change is often caused by a stuck voice button, Dual/Split mode, or corrupted panel memory. Reselect Strings/others, then try Yamaha’s panel reset by powering on while holding the right-most key (C7).

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A panel reset can clear customized voice, dual, and metronome settings on the P-155.

Follow these steps

  1. Reselect the preferred voice

Press the Strings or Others voice button until Strings/others is selected again. Play a few notes and watch whether the voice immediately jumps back to Church Organ.

You should see: Either the preferred voice stays selected, or it switches again and confirms a deeper panel issue.

  2. Check Dual, Split, and stuck buttons

Turn off Dual and Split if those indicators are lit. Gently press and release each voice button, especially Church Organ and Strings/Others, to free a stuck button.

You should see: Only one intended voice mode is active and no button stays physically depressed.

  3. Disconnect pedals and accessories

Power off, unplug the sustain pedal and any USB or MIDI cables, then power on and select Strings/others again.

You should see: The voice stays stable without accessories connected, or the problem continues on the piano alone.

  4. Perform the C7 power-on reset

Turn the piano off. Hold the right-most key (C7) while turning the power back on, then release the key after startup. Reselect Strings/others and test again.

You should see: The panel returns to a default state and the voice no longer jumps to Church Organ on its own.

  5. Restore your preferred settings

After a successful reset, set your voice, touch, and metronome preferences again. If Church Organ still appears by itself, contact Yamaha support or a piano technician.

You should see: Your preferred voice remains selected during normal playing.

Extra tips

What to look for: The voice name on the panel jumping to Church Organ, whether Dual or Split lights are on, and whether any voice button feels stuck.

Before you change anything: Confirm the model is a Yamaha P-155. Note your preferred voice (Strings/others) before resetting. Unplug any sustain pedal or MIDI accessories that might send unexpected messages. A panel reset may clear customized voice or metronome settings you will need to set again.
