How do I program department names on a Royal 520DX cash register?
Answer
On a Royal 520DX, enter Program (PRG) mode and program one department at a time: select the department number, enter the name with the register’s letter chart, then save before moving to the next department. If it beeps with an error, you are usually still in the wrong mode or entering price data mixed with the name.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A full memory clear can erase totals and all programming; avoid it unless the manual requires it and you accept the data loss.
Follow these steps
Switch to PRG mode
Turn the mode key or control to PRG (Program) as shown in the Royal 520DX manual. Confirm the display indicates program mode before pressing department keys.
You should see: The register is clearly in PRG mode and ready for department setup.
Select only the first department number
Choose Department 1 only. Do not enter departments 2–4 yet. Keep the entry limited to the department you are naming.
You should see: Department 1 is selected for programming without a beep error.
Enter the department name with the letter chart
Enter the name only (for example BEER) using the letter-entry method in the Royal manual. Do not mix in prices or tax codes in this step unless the manual’s name procedure requires a specific follow-up key.
You should see: The display accepts the letters for the department name.
Save Department 1 before continuing
Complete and save the Department 1 = BEER programming using the finalize key sequence in the manual. Confirm it no longer errors before starting Department 2.
You should see: Department 1 is stored successfully.
Repeat for remaining departments
Program Department 2 = LIQUOR, Department 3 = WINE, and Department 4 = FOOD the same way—one department at a time. The 520DX supports many departments; only configure the ones you need.
You should see: Each department name saves without continuous beeping.
Return to register mode and test
Turn the mode control back to REG (register) and ring a test item under Department 1 to confirm the name or department assignment behaves as expected.
You should see: Sales in REG mode use the new department without program errors.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the key or mode switch is in PRG, any on-screen error with beeping, and that you are entering a department number and name—not a random amount.
Before you change anything: Have the Royal 520DX manual letter-entry chart nearby. Write your department list first (for example Dept 1 BEER, 2 LIQUOR, 3 WINE, 4 FOOD). Avoid a full memory clear unless you accept losing totals and prior programming. Use only the official Royal manual steps for your exact model.
