Why does a FreeStyle Libre reader say the sensor is not compatible?
Answer
FreeStyle Libre readers and sensors are matched by product generation and often by country or region. A "sensor not compatible" message usually means the reader and sensor are from different systems or markets, not that the sensor is simply faulty.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not ignore persistent glucose-device errors for medical decisions; use your clinician’s backup testing method if readings are unavailable.
Follow these steps
Restart the reader and scan again
Power the reader fully off, wait about 30 seconds, turn it back on, and try scanning the sensor once more to rule out a temporary glitch.
You should see: Either the scan works or the same compatibility message returns immediately.
Match the Libre generation
Check whether the sensor is Libre, Libre 2, or another generation, and confirm the reader is made for that same generation. A Libre 2 sensor generally needs a Libre 2–capable reader or the official app path for that product.
You should see: You know whether generation mismatch is the problem.
Compare country or region markings
Look at the sensor box and the reader label for the same country or region marking. Readers and sensors sold for different markets are a common cause of compatibility errors even when the product name looks similar.
You should see: Region markings either match or clearly differ.
Use a matched pair or official support path
If generation or region do not match, obtain a sensor and reader pair sold for the same market, or contact Abbott FreeStyle Libre support / your pharmacy with the exact error text and both product codes.
You should see: You have a clear next step: matched hardware or official support for a replacement.

Extra tips
What to look for: The exact compatibility message on the reader, Libre generation on the sensor box, and country or region markings on both the sensor and reader
Before you change anything: Keep the sensor sterile packaging until you confirm compatibility. Compare labels on the sensor box and the reader itself. Do not force-activate a sensor that the reader rejects. This article is about device pairing only—follow your clinician’s advice for glucose care.
