How do I fix sound sync and picture freezing on a Sony TV only in TVNZ?

Answer

If only TVNZ freezes or loses audio sync on a Sony TV while other apps play fine, the issue is usually the TVNZ app data or a temporary TV software glitch, not the HDMI stick. Clear or reinstall the TVNZ app on the Sony TV, then power-cycle the TV before testing again.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Clearing app data signs you out of TVNZ and removes local app settings for that app only.

Follow these steps

  1. Clear or force-stop the TVNZ app

On the Sony TV, go to Settings, then Applications or Apps, then Manage Installed Applications, open TVNZ or TVNZ+, and choose Force Stop. If Clear Data or Clear Cache is available, clear cache first, then clear data if the problem continues.

You should see: The TVNZ app closes cleanly and will relaunch as a fresh session.

  2. Relaunch TVNZ and test a live or VOD stream

Open TVNZ again, sign in if asked, and play the same content that previously froze or lost audio sync for several minutes.

You should see: Playback stays smooth, or the freeze or sync issue returns in a repeatable way.

  3. Power-cycle the Sony TV

Turn the TV off, unplug it from power for about 2 minutes, plug it back in, turn it on, and test TVNZ again without changing other apps.

You should see: TVNZ plays without freezing or audio lag after the cold start.

  4. Update or reinstall TVNZ if needed

If the problem continues, check Google Play or the Sony app store for a TVNZ update, or uninstall and reinstall the app, then test again. Leave working apps like YouTube alone.

You should see: An updated or reinstalled TVNZ app plays normally, or you have enough detail to contact TVNZ or Sony support.

Extra tips

What to look for: Freezing or audio out of sync only inside TVNZ or TVNZ+, while other streaming apps on the same TV play smoothly.

Before you change anything: Confirm which app shows the problem and whether HDMI inputs are affected. Note your Sony TV model from Settings or the rear label. Avoid a full factory reset until app-level steps fail. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
