Why won't a glucose monitor reader charge even when plugged in?

Answer

This usually points to a cable, adapter, or outlet issue rather than the reader itself, since using anything other than the original cable and adapter can prevent charging on some medical devices. A sensor countdown message on screen is a separate, unrelated indicator.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only use cables and adapters approved by the manufacturer for this medical device; unapproved accessories may not charge it safely or at all.
  • If the reader loses power during an active sensor session, readings during that time may be lost.

Follow these steps

  1. Use only the original cable and adapter

Use only the manufacturer's original USB cable and wall adapter that came with the reader, since other cables or adapters may not deliver enough power to charge it.

You should see: The reader is connected using its original, approved charging accessories.

  2. Plug directly into a wall outlet

Plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet rather than a computer USB port, power strip, or surge protector, and inspect the cable and port for lint, debris, or damage.

You should see: The reader is connected to a direct wall outlet with a clean, undamaged cable and port.

  3. Let it charge for at least 30 to 60 minutes

Leave the reader connected and undisturbed for at least 30 to 60 minutes before checking the charge icon again, since some readers update the icon slowly.

You should see: After waiting, the charge icon shows a higher level than before, or it is confirmed the level truly has not changed.

  4. Try a different wall outlet

If the icon still has not moved, try plugging into a different wall outlet to rule out a problem with the original outlet.

You should see: You can tell whether the issue follows the reader (still not charging) or was related to that outlet.

  5. Contact the manufacturer if it still won't charge

If the charge icon never changes after trying a different outlet, contact the manufacturer's support line, since this may indicate a cable, port, or battery replacement is needed.

You should see: Support confirms next steps, which may include a replacement part or unit.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the charge icon changes at all after 30 to 60 minutes, and whether a separate sensor countdown message (such as a number of days remaining) is being confused with the charge status.

Before you change anything: Confirm the exact reader model and roughly how old it is. Check that the cable and adapter being used are the original ones that came with the reader. Confirm the sensor countdown message and the charge indicator are two separate things on screen. Do not use a third-party cable or adapter not approved for the device.
