How do I fix a Fitbit Versa 4 that will not turn on after charging?

Answer

Start with the basics: charge the watch from a wall outlet with its original cable, clean the contacts, and then restart it by holding the side button. Google's Fitbit help describes these steps for a black screen and for charging problems. If the watch still does not respond, contact Fitbit support rather than trying repairs or unlock tools.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop charging and unplug the watch if it becomes hot, swells, or smells unusual. Do not keep charging a damaged battery or a damaged cable.
  • Callers, texts, or emails that offer a quick fix for a fee or ask for account codes can be scams. Contact Fitbit only through its official help center or app.

Follow these steps

  1. Clean the charging contacts

Google's Fitbit help says to check whether the small gold pins on the charging cable are stuck or dirty, and to gently clean the gold contacts on the back of the watch and the pins on the charger. Use a soft, dry cloth, and do not force anything into the contacts.

You should see: The contacts look clean and the charger sits firmly on the back of the watch.

  2. Charge from a wall outlet, not a computer

Plug the charging cable into a wall outlet using a plug adapter that you know works. Google's Fitbit help says a completely black screen can be fixed by plugging the device into a wall outlet for 60 minutes, and says not to plug it into a computer. Leave the watch on the charger for the full hour before checking the screen.

You should see: After the charging period, the screen lights up or a charging symbol appears. If the screen is still black, go to the next step.

  3. Check the power source if you see an error

If the screen shows 'insufficient power source,' Google's Fitbit help suggests unplugging other gadgets from the USB hub, or trying a different wall plug. Use one charger at a time so you know which power source is working.

You should see: The charging error goes away, or you know which power source does not work.

  4. Restart the watch

With the watch still on the charger, press and hold the physical side button for 10 seconds. Google's Fitbit help describes this restart for the Versa series. Release the button and wait for the Fitbit logo to appear on the screen.

You should see: The Fitbit logo appears, or the watch responds to a press of the side button.

  5. Contact Fitbit support if it still does not turn on

If the watch still does not respond after the steps above, go to Google's Fitbit help center and follow the charging troubleshooting article, then use the support options it lists. Ask about warranty or replacement options for a watch that will not turn on.

You should see: You have a support request open with Fitbit, or the watch starts working again.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the screen lights up at all, whether a charging symbol appears when the watch is on the charger, and whether the 'insufficient power source' message appears on the screen or in the Fitbit app.

Before you change anything: Find the original charging cable and a wall plug you know works with a phone charger. Note the Fitbit account email and the date you bought the watch, in case you need warranty support. Do not open the watch or use tools on its back. Do not share account passwords or codes with anyone who contacts you about the watch.
