How do I cancel a paid membership and request a refund for an unexpected charge?

Answer

Cancel the membership from the official account billing page or app store subscription settings first, then request a refund through the company’s official billing support and keep written confirmation.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only use the company’s official website, app, or the Apple/Google subscription pages—not links from surprise emails.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify how the membership was billed

Check whether the charge came from the company’s website billing, Apple subscriptions, Google Play subscriptions, or another app store, because each has a different cancel path.

You should see: You know which billing channel controls the membership.

  2. Cancel the subscription in the official settings

Sign into the official account billing page or the device’s subscription settings and cancel or turn off auto-renew so future charges stop.

You should see: The subscription shows cancelled or set to end after the current period.

  3. Request a refund with the charge details

Use the company’s official support or billing form to request a refund. Include the charge date, amount, and account email, and ask for written confirmation.

You should see: A refund case or ticket number is created, or you receive a written reply.

  4. Save confirmation emails and screenshots

Keep screenshots of the cancelled status and any support replies. If the charge was through an app store, also use that store’s official request-a-refund option.

You should see: You have proof of cancellation and of the refund request.

  5. Escalate through your card issuer if needed

If the company does not respond in a reasonable time, contact your bank or card issuer about the unrecognized or unwanted recurring charge and provide your cancellation evidence.

You should see: The issuer opens a dispute review or advises on next steps.

Extra tips

What to look for: A recurring membership charge on a card statement, an active subscription status in the account, and any email receipts that show the billing terms.

Before you change anything: Find the exact company name, charge amount, and charge date on your statement. Locate any welcome or billing emails from the service. Cancel through the official account site or the Apple/Google subscription page if that is how you subscribed. Do not share your full card number in email or chat.
