How do I fix a Kindle that will not connect to Wi-Fi?

Answer

Restart the Kindle with a long power-button hold, then forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network. Most Kindle Wi-Fi failures are a stuck wireless session, a wrong password, or a router setting that blocks the device—not a broken Kindle.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset erases downloaded books and settings; use it only after simpler Wi-Fi steps fail and you can re-register the Kindle.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the Kindle fully

Press and hold the power button for about 40 seconds until the screen goes blank and the device restarts, then wait for the home screen to return.

You should see: The Kindle reboots cleanly and Wi-Fi settings are available again.

  2. Confirm the network appears

Open Settings → Wi-Fi (or All Settings → Wi-Fi) and check that your network name is listed and that Airplane Mode or a Wi-Fi off toggle is not blocking the radio.

You should see: Your network name is visible, or you know the Kindle cannot see any networks.

  3. Forget and rejoin the network

Tap the network name, choose Forget or remove it if offered, then select it again and enter the current Wi-Fi password carefully.

You should see: The Kindle shows Connected, or a clearer password/security error.

  4. Check the router basics

On a phone already on the network, confirm the Wi-Fi password was not changed. If possible, briefly try a 2.4 GHz network or guest network—some Kindles struggle with certain 5 GHz-only or enterprise setups.

You should see: You know whether the Kindle can join a simpler 2.4 GHz or guest SSID.

  5. Retry after a router reboot

Unplug the router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait until Wi-Fi is back on other devices, then try the Kindle again.

You should see: The Kindle connects, or the same specific error returns for support.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact on-screen Wi-Fi error (for example that the Kindle was unable to connect), whether other devices still use the same network, and whether the password or router was changed recently.

Before you change anything: Confirm other phones or laptops still connect to the same Wi-Fi. Have the current Wi-Fi password ready. Note whether the Kindle sees the network name in the list. Do not factory-reset the Kindle until simpler restart and rejoin steps fail.
