How do I fix a Kindle that is not responding or stuck on a white screen?

Answer

A frozen or white-screen Kindle usually needs a force restart. Charge it for 15 to 20 minutes, then hold the power button for about 40 seconds until the screen refreshes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A force restart can interrupt an in-progress download or sync, but it should not erase your Amazon library stored in the cloud.

Follow these steps

  1. Charge the Kindle first

Plug the Kindle into power with a working cable and leave it connected for 15 to 20 minutes, even if the screen stays white or blank.

You should see: The battery has enough charge for a restart attempt, and any charge light behavior is visible.

  2. Force-restart with a long press

Keep the Kindle on power if possible. Press and hold the power button for a full 40 seconds, then release and wait for the screen to refresh or the Amazon/Kindle logo to appear.

You should see: The e-ink screen clears or reboots instead of staying frozen.

  3. Wait through the reboot

Give the Kindle a few minutes after the restart. Do not repeatedly mash the power button while it is coming back up.

You should see: The home screen or last book page returns and the device responds to taps.

  4. Retry the force restart if it freezes again

If the white or frozen screen returns, charge again for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat the 40-second power hold once more before considering Amazon device support or a replacement path.

You should see: Either the Kindle recovers again, or you have confirmed a hardware-level failure after a proper force restart.

Extra tips

What to look for: No response to taps or buttons, a white or blank e-ink screen, or unusual status lights after the device froze.

Before you change anything: Connect the official or known-good USB cable and charger before attempting a reset. Do not try to pry open the Kindle case. Avoid a factory reset until a force restart has been tried. Never share your Amazon password with unexpected callers.
