What should I do if a Kindle is stuck on a download screen?
Answer
Keep the Kindle plugged in, force-restart it by holding the power button about 40 seconds, then turn Wi-Fi off and remove the stuck title from the download queue or library. Reset the device only if it still will not leave that screen.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A device reset can remove locally downloaded books until you download them again from Amazon.
- Do not try unofficial firmware tools from third-party sites.
Follow these steps
Charge and force restart
Leave the Kindle plugged in. Press and hold the power button continuously for about 40 seconds, then release and wait 2 to 3 minutes for the home screen.
You should see: The Kindle restarts and leaves the stuck page, or it remains frozen.
Stop Wi-Fi briefly
Once you can open menus, turn Wi-Fi off so the stuck download cannot immediately resume.
You should see: Wi-Fi is off and the device stays responsive.
Remove the stuck title
Open Your Library or the download queue, find the book that was downloading, and remove or cancel that download. Turn Wi-Fi back on and download again later if needed.
You should see: The queue clears and the Kindle stays on the home screen.
Reset only if still stuck
If the device never recovers, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset when you can reach settings, or follow Amazon’s forced reset steps for your Kindle model.
You should see: The Kindle returns to setup or home after reset.

Extra tips
What to look for: A frozen Kindle page with a downward arrow and animated dots during or after a download.
Before you change anything: Charge the Kindle during troubleshooting. Note any book title that was downloading. A full reset may remove downloaded books that are still in your Amazon library.
