How do I back up an Android phone before replacing it with a device upgrade?
Answer
Before turning in or wiping the old phone, create a Google backup and, on Samsung devices, a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup. A replacement phone does not copy your apps, photos, and settings by itself—you restore from the backup during new-device setup.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A replacement phone will not automatically transfer your data unless you restore from a backup or use a transfer tool.
Follow these steps
Check Google backup status
On the current phone, open Settings > Google > All services > Backup (wording can vary) and confirm backup is on for the Google account you will use on the new phone. Start a backup if one is not recent.
You should see: Backup shows as completed or in progress for that Google account.
Back up Samsung data if applicable
On a Samsung phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup and use Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud to back up contacts, messages, photos, and settings you care about.
You should see: Samsung backup finishes successfully or Smart Switch is ready to transfer.
Copy photos and important files
Open Google Photos or Files and confirm recent photos and documents are synced or copied to cloud or a computer before you give up the old phone.
You should see: Important media is visible in cloud storage or on another device.
Complete the upgrade path
Follow your carrier or manufacturer’s official device-upgrade steps only after backups are done. Do not factory reset until the new phone is in hand and you confirm you can restore.
You should see: You receive or activate the replacement without wiping the old phone too early.
Restore on the new phone
During new-phone setup, sign in with the same Google account and choose restore from backup, or use Smart Switch cable/wireless transfer from the old phone if it is still available.
You should see: Apps and data begin restoring onto the replacement phone.

Extra tips
What to look for: Messages such as Eligible for a Device upgrade, Backup status in Google settings, and Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup confirmation.
Before you change anything: Confirm which Google account is on the phone and that it has enough storage. Finish the backup before factory reset or trade-in. Use only the official carrier or manufacturer upgrade path. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
