How do I fix a phone that suddenly has no working cellular service?

Answer

Start with Airplane Mode toggle, a full restart, and a check that Cellular or Mobile data is turned on. Many “phone not working” cases are a disabled line, bad signal, or a brief carrier glitch rather than a broken handset.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not share account PINs or one-time codes with unexpected callers claiming carrier support.
  • Deleting an eSIM without carrier guidance can take the line offline until it is reissued.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it off and wait for signal bars to return.

You should see: Cellular signal returns, or No Service remains.

  2. Restart the phone completely

Power the phone all the way off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on and test a call.

You should see: Service restores after reboot, or the problem persists.

  3. Confirm the cellular line is enabled

On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and make sure the line is turned on and a phone number is listed. On Android, check Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or Mobile network.

You should see: The line shows on and the number is visible, or you find it disabled.

  4. Reseat SIM or check eSIM status

If the phone uses a physical SIM, power off and reseat it. If it uses eSIM, confirm the plan shows active. Then test again outdoors or near a window.

You should see: The carrier name appears and a test call or data session works.

  5. Contact the carrier if No Service continues

Ask the carrier to check for outages, account suspension, or provisioning problems on your number.

You should see: The carrier restores provisioning or explains the account block.

Extra tips

What to look for: No Service or SOS labels, missing phone number under Cellular settings, and whether Wi‑Fi still works.

Before you change anything: Note whether Wi‑Fi calling or Wi‑Fi browsing still works. Avoid random network resets until basic toggles fail. Have the carrier account handy if service stays down.
