How do I fix a Samsung phone that cannot make calls?

Answer

When a Samsung phone will not make calls, start with a full restart, confirm the SIM is enabled and the network mode includes LTE/5G, then place a test call to voicemail. If two phones fail the same way, the problem is often the account, SIM, or carrier outage—not the handset alone.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset will erase the phone and will not fix a suspended carrier line or a bad SIM—back up first and treat reset as a last step for a single failing handset.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the phone completely

Power the Samsung all the way off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If you use an eSIM, leave it installed; do not remove profiles yet.

You should see: The phone reconnects to the network and signal bars stabilize after a minute.

  2. Verify SIM and network mode

Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile networks. Confirm the SIM/mobile data is turned on and network mode is set to an automatic option such as 5G/LTE/3G/2G (wording varies by model).

You should see: The SIM shows as active and the phone is allowed to use voice-capable network modes.

  3. Place a test call to voicemail

Open the Phone app and call your own voicemail or another number you know answers. Listen for ringing, a carrier recording, or an immediate failure tone.

You should see: The call connects or you get a clear carrier message you can act on (for example, account suspended).

  4. Compare one phone versus both

If you have two phones, test the same SIM (or line) in each. If both fail, contact the carrier about the line. If only one fails, try a known-good SIM in the problem phone to separate hardware from account issues.

You should see: You know whether the fault follows the SIM/account or stays with one handset.

Extra tips

What to look for: Calls fail to connect, immediate busy/fast busy, “Mobile network not available,” no signal bars, or the same failure on more than one phone using the same line or SIM.

Before you change anything: Note whether one phone or both phones fail to call. Check that the account is active and paid with the carrier. Try Wi-Fi calling only after basic cellular settings are confirmed. Do not factory-reset until you have tested the SIM in another phone or a known-good SIM in this phone.
