Why does Google keep showing “less than a minute ago” and never finish updating?

Answer

A stuck “less than a minute ago” status usually means the browser session, an extension, VPN, proxy, or secure DNS tool is blocking Google from finishing the update. Try a private window first, then disable extensions or network filters that rewrite Google traffic.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only sign in at official Google pages. Stop if a popup or message asks you to verify your account through an unexpected link.

Follow these steps

  1. Test in a private browser window

Open an incognito or private window, sign into Google only if needed, and open the same Drive, Docs, or Google page that shows “less than a minute ago.”

You should see: The status updates normally, or the same stuck message appears even with extensions disabled.

  2. Disable extensions that change web traffic

If the private window works, return to your normal browser and temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and other extensions, then reload the page.

You should see: The stuck “less than a minute ago” status clears after the conflicting extension is turned off.

  3. Turn off VPN, proxy, or secure DNS

Temporarily disable any VPN, proxy, or secure DNS tool, then reload the Google page and wait for the status to refresh.

You should see: Google finishes updating and the status changes from “less than a minute ago.”

  4. Sign out and sign back in once

If it is still stuck, sign out of Google in that browser, close the tab, open a fresh tab, sign back in on the official Google site, and check the page again.

You should see: A fresh account session loads and the update status behaves normally.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Google Drive, Docs, or account page that never changes from “less than a minute ago,” even after waiting or refreshing.

Before you change anything: Stay signed into the correct Google account. Note whether the stuck status appears only in one browser or on every device. Avoid clearing all browsing data until a private-window test is done. Never share your Google password or verification codes with unexpected callers.
