Why is voice-to-text not working on a phone?

Answer

Voice-to-text usually fails because microphone permission, dictation language, or offline speech settings are off, or the keyboard’s microphone shortcut is disabled. Turning those back on and testing in a simple message field often restores dictation.

Follow these steps

  1. Check microphone permission

Open the phone’s Settings, find the keyboard app or the app where dictation fails, and allow Microphone access.

You should see: Microphone permission shows as allowed for that app or keyboard.

  2. Turn dictation on in system settings

On iPhone, check Settings → General → Keyboard for Enable Dictation. On Android, check the Google or keyboard settings for Voice typing / Dictation and confirm the language matches how you speak.

You should see: Dictation or voice typing is enabled for the language you use.

  3. Test in a simple message

Open Messages or a notes app, tap the microphone on the keyboard, speak a short sentence, and wait for text to appear.

You should see: Spoken words appear as text in the field.

  4. Restart the phone if dictation is still silent

Power the phone off fully, turn it back on, then try the keyboard microphone once more on Wi‑Fi or mobile data.

You should see: Dictation responds again, or you get a clear error you can use for further support.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the microphone icon appears on the keyboard, and any permission or “dictation unavailable” message when you tap it.

Before you change anything: Confirm you are testing in a normal text field such as Messages or Notes. Check that the phone is not in a mode that blocks the microphone for privacy. Note whether this started after an update or after switching keyboards. Do not install random “voice fixer” apps from unknown links.
