How do I restore dial tone on a phone after a Zoom session?

Answer

No dial tone after Zoom usually means the phone line, softphone app, or handset audio path is still hung or needs a fresh restart. Fully quitting Zoom and power-cycling the phone often restores the dial tone.

Follow these steps

  1. Fully quit Zoom

On every computer or phone that joined the Zoom meeting, end the meeting, then fully quit the Zoom app instead of only closing the window. On a computer, confirm Zoom is not still running in the menu bar or system tray.

You should see: Zoom is completely closed and no longer holding the microphone, headset, or softphone connection.

  2. Restart the phone

Restart the phone that has no dial tone. For a mobile phone, use the normal restart option. For a desk or VoIP phone, use its restart menu or power cycle from the wall adapter if that is how the model reboots.

You should see: The phone finishes restarting and returns to its idle screen.

  3. Do a full power cycle

If there is still no dial tone, turn the phone fully off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. For a corded VoIP or base unit, unplug power for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait until it finishes booting.

You should see: After reboot, lifting the handset or opening the dialer produces a normal dial tone.

  4. Test a regular call

Try dialing a known working number. If the line is VoIP, also check that the internet connection is up and that the phone shows registered or ready status.

You should see: You hear dial tone and can place a call, or you get a clear status or error that points to line registration.

Extra tips

What to look for: Silence instead of a dial tone when you lift the handset or open the phone app, especially right after a Zoom meeting ends.

Before you change anything: Confirm whether the affected phone is a landline, VoIP desk phone, or mobile phone. Note whether Zoom was used on the same device or on a nearby computer sharing the line. Avoid factory resets until a simple restart is tried. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
