How do I fix Apple CarPlay that stays greyed out on a Pioneer stereo?

On many Pioneer units such as the DMH series, CarPlay stays unavailable until the iPhone is connected to the radio’s USB data port with a certified cable. Restart the car and stereo, use the correct rear USB lead, and trust the computer prompt on the iPhone.

Follow these steps
Restart the car radio and iPhone
Turn the vehicle and Pioneer unit fully off, unlock the iPhone, restart the iPhone, then start the car again and wait for the stereo to finish booting.
You should see: Both devices begin from a clean state before the next cable connection.
Connect to the Pioneer USB data port
Plug the iPhone directly into the Pioneer USB data lead using an Apple or MFi-certified cable with no adapter, daisy-chain hub, or cigarette-lighter USB charger in between.
You should see: The iPhone shows a Trust/Allow prompt or CarPlay launches; the CarPlay icon is no longer greyed out.
Allow CarPlay on the iPhone
On the iPhone, tap Trust if asked, then go to Settings > General > CarPlay, select the Pioneer system, and ensure CarPlay is enabled.
You should see: The Pioneer system appears under CarPlay and can connect.
Test with another cable if it still fails
Repeat the connection with a different certified cable and, if available, the other USB port only if your Pioneer documentation says that port supports data. Leave charge-only ports unused for CarPlay.
You should see: CarPlay stays connected, or you confirm the stereo needs dealer/USB lead service.
