Why won’t my iPhone ring on incoming calls?

Answer

An iPhone that does not ring is usually on Silent mode, has Ringer and Alerts volume turned down, or has Focus/Do Not Disturb silencing calls. Check the side Ring/Silent switch, raise Ringer and Alerts in Settings → Sounds & Haptics, and confirm Focus is not blocking calls.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the Ring/Silent switch

Look at the switch above the volume buttons. Flip it so the phone is in Ring mode (orange should not be visible in the switch recess on most models). On newer iPhones with an Action button, open Control Center or Settings to confirm Silent mode is off.

You should see: A on-screen cue confirms Ring mode, or Silent mode is clearly turned off.

  2. Raise Ringer and Alerts volume

Go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds), then drag the Ringer and Alerts slider upward. Optionally enable Change with Buttons if you want the side buttons to control ringer volume.

You should see: You hear a preview tone as the slider moves, and ringer volume is clearly above the minimum.

  3. Turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb

Open Control Center and turn off Focus, Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work modes that silence calls. In Settings → Focus, also check that Allowed People includes callers you expect.

You should see: No Focus icon remains in the status bar, and a test call can ring.

  4. Confirm a ringtone is selected

In Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, select a standard ringtone and play the preview.

You should see: A ringtone preview plays through the earpiece/speaker path used for rings.

  5. Test with a real incoming call

Have another phone call you while the iPhone is locked and not on a call. Watch for ring sound, vibration, and the incoming-call screen.

You should see: The iPhone rings at the new volume, or you can tell whether only vibration still occurs.

Extra tips

What to look for: Orange showing in the Ring/Silent switch, a low or zero Ringer and Alerts slider, Focus/Do Not Disturb icons in the status bar, and whether the phone vibrates instead of ringing.

Before you change anything: Have someone place a test call, or call yourself from another line. Note whether texts and app alerts make sound. Avoid changing unrelated Accessibility settings until the basic ringer checks are done. Do not share Apple ID codes with unexpected callers offering to “fix” the ringer remotely.
