How do I fix a phone number that will not transfer to a new iPhone?
Answer
Confirm the line appears under Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service), toggle Airplane Mode, restart the new iPhone, and finish any carrier eSIM or activation steps. Number transfers usually fail because activation is incomplete on the new phone or the old phone still holds the line—not because Messages alone is broken.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deleting an eSIM without carrier guidance can remove the line from the phone until it is reissued.
Follow these steps
Check Cellular on the new iPhone
Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service / Mobile Data) and see whether a phone number, plan name, or eSIM appears and whether status says Activating, No Service, or shows signal.
You should see: You know if the line is missing, still activating, or already listed.
Toggle Airplane Mode
Swipe to Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it off and wait for the carrier status to refresh.
You should see: Cellular status updates, or the same error remains for the next step.
Restart the new iPhone
Power the new iPhone fully off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, and recheck Settings → Cellular.
You should see: The number or plan appears, or activation continues with a clearer status.
Finish carrier transfer from the old phone if needed
If you used Quick Transfer or a carrier app, unlock the old iPhone and complete any on-screen transfer approval. If you used a QR code or carrier instructions, carefully redo only the official eSIM install steps.
You should see: The new iPhone receives the line and the old phone loses cellular service for that number.
Restart both phones and retest calling
Restart the old and new iPhones, then try placing a call or sending a text from the new iPhone to confirm the number is live.
You should see: Calls or texts work on the new iPhone, or Cellular still shows a specific failure to give the carrier.
Contact the carrier if activation stays stuck
If Cellular remains empty or “Activating” for a long time, contact your carrier with the new iPhone’s EID/IMEI from Settings → General → About and ask them to complete or resend the number transfer.
You should see: The carrier provisions the line again or explains what is blocking the port.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether Settings → Cellular lists your number or plan, any “Activating…” or “No Service” status, and whether the old iPhone still shows the same line as active.
Before you change anything: Have the account PIN or passcode your carrier uses for porting if they ask for it on official channels only. Keep both phones charged and nearby. Prefer Wi-Fi during eSIM setup. Do not give account codes to unexpected callers claiming they will “push” the number.
