Why does Apple Watch show Time Asleep but missing sleep stages?
Answer
Time Asleep without stages usually means basic sleep detection is working, while stage breakdown needs a supported watch, full overnight wear, and a complete Sleep setup. Decide whether the issue is setup, wear/battery, or model support before changing Health data.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Clearing sleep data from Health can permanently remove history you may want to keep.
Follow these steps
Decide what Health is actually recording
Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Show All Data and note whether overnight sessions exist and whether they include only duration or stage details.
You should see: You can tell if any sleep samples synced and whether stages were ever stored.
Rule out setup gaps
In the Watch app on iPhone, confirm Sleep tracking and your bedtime schedule or Sleep Focus are on, then keep iPhone and watch updated.
You should see: Sleep is fully enabled before the next overnight test.
Rule out wear and battery gaps
On the next night, wear the watch snugly for the whole sleep window with Wrist Detection on and enough battery to last until morning.
You should see: The following day shows a more complete sleep session if wear/battery was the cause.
Rule out model or software limits
If duration keeps appearing without stages after a clean test night, check Apple’s sleep-stage support for your exact Apple Watch model and watchOS version.
You should see: You either confirm stages should appear and need another sync/test, or you learn the watch only reports duration.

Extra tips
What to look for: Time Asleep or sleep duration present in Health, with blank or missing REM, Core, or Deep stage charts
Before you change anything: Do not delete existing Health sleep history until you have checked Show All Data. Confirm your Apple Watch model supports sleep stages on its current watchOS version. Plan one full test night with the watch worn and charged enough to finish. Never share Apple ID details with anyone offering to repair Health charts.
