How do I get a Roomba i4 Smart Map to save after a mapping run?

Answer

After a mapping run, open the iRobot Home app, select the Roomba i4, and check Maps or Smart Maps. If it still asks you to create a map, update the app and robot software, keep the robot on the dock with Wi‑Fi connected, then start another clean/mapping run with Clean Everywhere so the map can finish learning and save.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Factory-resetting the Roomba can erase maps and preferences; only do that after normal map-saving steps fail.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Maps for the Roomba i4

Open the iRobot Home app, tap your Roomba i4, then open Maps or Smart Maps. Note whether a map thumbnail appears or the app still asks you to create a Smart Map.

You should see: You can see either a saved map, a map still learning, or a clear prompt to create a Smart Map.

  2. Update the app and robot software

Update the iRobot Home app from the App Store or Google Play. In the robot’s settings in the app, check for and install any Roomba software update, then leave the robot on the dock until the update finishes.

You should see: The app and robot report they are up to date, and the robot remains online on the dock.

  3. Confirm docked Wi‑Fi after mapping

With the robot docked, confirm it still shows as connected in the app. If it is offline, move the Home Base closer to the router or improve Wi‑Fi coverage, then reopen Maps.

You should see: The robot stays online long enough for map data to sync after a run.

  4. Run another Clean Everywhere mapping clean

Start a Clean Everywhere (or full-home) clean so the Roomba can continue learning the layout. Let it finish and return to the dock on its own, then wait several minutes before checking Maps again.

You should see: Maps or Smart Maps updates with a learning or saved map instead of only Ready to vacuum.

  5. Recheck Smart Maps after syncing

Force-close and reopen the iRobot Home app, select the Roomba i4, and open Maps or Smart Maps again. If a map appears as incomplete, run one more full clean before renaming or editing rooms.

You should see: A Smart Map is present, or the app clearly shows map training is still in progress.

Extra tips

What to look for: Maps or Smart Maps still saying create a map; Ready to vacuum on the dock; Clean Everywhere as the clean type; app or robot update prompts.

Before you change anything: Confirm you are using the official iRobot Home app. Keep the Roomba on its Home Base with a strong Wi‑Fi signal while the map processes. Do not factory-reset the robot unless you are prepared to remake maps and clean preferences. Never share your iRobot account password or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
