How do I fix in-app purchases that fail on iPhone?
Answer
Confirm the Apple ID payment method under Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping, check Screen Time purchase restrictions, then sign out of Media & Purchases and back in. A billing hold or blocked In-App Purchases setting is a common cause even when the card looks valid.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop if a website outside the App Store asks you to pay to unlock purchases or verify your card.
Follow these steps
Check Payment & Shipping
Go to Settings, tap your name, then Payment & Shipping. Open the payment method, fix any expired card or address errors, and make sure a valid default method is selected.
You should see: The payment method shows as usable with no billing warning.
Allow In-App Purchases in Screen Time
Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Set In-App Purchases to Allow, or turn restrictions off temporarily to test.
You should see: In-App Purchases are allowed for the Apple ID on this iPhone.
Sign out of Media & Purchases
Go to Settings, tap your name, then Media & Purchases, choose Sign Out, then sign back in with the same Apple ID and try the in-app purchase again.
You should see: The purchase sheet accepts Face ID, Touch ID, or password and completes.
Update iOS and retry
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update, then reopen the app and attempt a small purchase again.
You should see: The App Store purchase flow works on the updated iPhone software.

Extra tips
What to look for: Any payment decline, billing update, or Screen Time passcode prompt at checkout, and whether Payment & Shipping shows a red warning on the card.
Before you change anything: Know the Apple ID that downloaded the game. Have the correct payment method and billing address ready. Note any Screen Time passcode before changing purchase restrictions. Never share your Apple ID password with unexpected callers.
