How do I cancel a Verizon phone line added on a friend’s account?

Answer

The account owner usually has to change or cancel the line. If the phone and line were added on a friend’s Verizon account, that friend—or an authorized account user—must contact Verizon to remove the line, return equipment if required, and review early termination or device-payment balances.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Canceling or returning late can leave device installment or early termination balances on the account holder’s bill.
  • Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to keep a multi-year line you cannot afford or to pay them privately to “fix” the contract.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm who owns the account

Check the Verizon paperwork or welcome messages for the account holder’s name. If the line is on your friend’s account, treat that person as the one who must authorize cancellation or line removal.

You should see: You know whether you can act alone or need the account holder.

  2. Have the account holder contact Verizon

Ask the friend who owns the account to sign in to My Verizon or call Verizon support and request removal or cancellation of the extra line added for your phone. If you are already an authorized user, you may be able to start this with them present.

You should see: Verizon explains the cancel or remove-line options and any remaining balances.

  3. Ask about device return and remaining balance

Before agreeing to anything, ask Verizon for the device payoff amount, whether a return or cancel window still applies, and what happens to taxes or activation fees already charged.

You should see: You have clear numbers for what it costs to stop the line now versus keeping it.

  4. Return equipment only through approved steps

If Verizon or the store offers a return, follow their official return instructions and keep the receipt. Do not mail the phone to an unofficial address given by a salesperson outside Verizon’s process.

You should see: The return is documented, or you know the line was removed and what balance remains.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the line and device payment are on a friend’s Verizon account, any installment or term agreement, and whether a return window still applies

Before you change anything: Gather the account holder’s name, the mobile number of the new line, and any receipts or contracts from the store. Do not ignore the first bill deadline while you decide. Use official Verizon support or a store—not a random buyer offering to “take over” the line for a fee. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
