How do I fix poor cellular reception and dropped calls on an iPhone at home?

Answer

At home, weak bars and dropped calls are often improved by enabling Wi-Fi Calling, installing any carrier settings update, then resetting network settings if signal stays bad. Toggle Wi-Fi Calling off and on again after a restart if calls still fail.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN configurations.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling

Connect to your home Wi-Fi, then go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and turn Wi-Fi Calling on. Enable it on any other household iPhone that needs the same fix.

You should see: Calls can use Wi-Fi when cellular signal is weak indoors.

  2. Check for a carrier settings update

Open Settings > General > About and wait several seconds. If a carrier settings update alert appears, install it.

You should see: Carrier settings update, or About shows no update prompt.

  3. Reset network settings

If reception is still poor, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, then confirm and rejoin your Wi-Fi network afterward.

You should see: Cellular and Wi-Fi configurations refresh and the phone re-registers on the network.

  4. Toggle Wi-Fi Calling and restart

Go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling, turn Wi-Fi Calling off, restart the iPhone, then turn Wi-Fi Calling back on.

You should see: Voice calls become more reliable at home, or you can confirm the issue is still carrier coverage.

  5. Test calls in the same rooms

Place and receive a short test call in the rooms where drops were worst, watching whether Wi-Fi Calling appears during the call.

You should see: You know whether the steps improved completion and drop rates.

Extra tips

What to look for: One bar or low signal at home, frequent dropped calls, and settings related to Wi-Fi Calling or Prefer Wi-Fi While Roaming/Cellular.

Before you change anything: Note your carrier name and whether home Wi-Fi is working. Back up Wi-Fi passwords if you reset network settings, because saved networks will be removed. Avoid factory resetting the iPhone for a signal issue. Never share account passwords or codes with unexpected callers.
