How do I fix a landline with no dial tone?

Answer

No dial tone on every extension usually means either a device is shorting the line or the carrier feed is down. Unplug all phones and equipment, then test one corded phone at the network interface test jack if you have access.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only open the customer-access portion of the network interface; do not alter sealed carrier compartments or outdoor drop wiring.

Follow these steps

  1. Unplug every phone and line device

Disconnect every phone, modem with phone filter, fax, and answering machine from every jack in the house so nothing remains on the line.

You should see: The line is clear of customer equipment that could short or silence dial tone.

  2. Test with one corded phone indoors

Plug a basic corded phone into one wall jack and listen for dial tone.

You should see: Dial tone returns, pointing to a bad device you removed, or there is still silence.

  3. Find the network interface test jack

If there is still no dial tone, locate the outdoor network interface box where the phone line enters the home. Open only the customer-access side if labeled for testing.

You should see: You see a test jack or plug that separates house wiring from the carrier line.

  4. Plug the corded phone into the test jack

Unplug the house wiring plug from that jack if required, then plug the corded phone directly into the test jack and listen for dial tone.

You should see: Dial tone at the test jack means the carrier feed is good and the fault is inside; no dial tone means call the phone company.

  5. Restore house connections or call the carrier

If the test jack has dial tone, reconnect house wiring and add phones back one at a time to find the bad device or jack. If the test jack is silent, contact the landline provider for an outside-line repair.

You should see: You either isolate a faulty indoor device or open a carrier repair request with clear test results.

Extra tips

What to look for: No dial tone on all phones, whether any device was recently added, and whether the network interface test jack has dial tone.

Before you change anything: Unplug all phones and line-powered devices before testing. Use a basic corded phone for the test jack check. If you open the network interface box, follow the carrier’s labeling and close it afterward. Do not climb poles or cut drop wires.
