How do I fix a Kindle library that is frozen and says books are no longer available?
Answer
Connect to Wi-Fi, wait a full minute on the library screen, then tap a greyed-out title again. If downloads still fail, restart the Kindle from the settings menu, then sync from the home/library options. A 40-second power-off alone often is not enough when the library catalog is stuck.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deregistering a Kindle removes downloads from the device and should be a last resort.
Follow these steps
Confirm Wi-Fi and reopen the library
Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi, open your library, and stay on that screen for a full minute so the device can refresh titles.
You should see: Wi-Fi shows connected and the library has had time to refresh.
Tap a greyed-out book again
After waiting, tap one of the greyed-out books or a sample you already requested. Watch for a download progress indicator instead of an immediate failure.
You should see: The title begins downloading, or you get a clearer error than a frozen library.
Restart from Kindle settings
Use Settings to restart the Kindle (preferred over only holding the power button briefly). After it returns to the lock or home screen, unlock and open the library again.
You should see: The Kindle finishes restarting and the library reloads.
Sync the device library
From the home or library menu, choose Sync or Sync My Kindle. Wait until sync finishes before tapping downloads again.
You should see: Sync completes and previously owned books become available to download.
Check the title on Amazon if one book still fails
If the whole library is fine but one book still says no longer available, open Content and Devices on Amazon’s website for your account and confirm that title is still listed for the Kindle. Re-deliver it if the option appears.
You should see: Either the book is redelivered, or you confirm the title is no longer on the account.

Extra tips
What to look for: The message books no longer available, greyed-out covers, whether samples also fail to download, and whether Wi-Fi is connected.
Before you change anything: Confirm Wi-Fi is connected on the Kindle. Note whether every title is greyed out or only some books. Avoid deregistering the Kindle until basic sync steps fail. Never share your Amazon password or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
