How does a veteran sign up for VA benefits online after past VA use?

Answer

Start at the official VA.gov website, create or sign in with a Login.gov or ID.me account, then use VA’s benefit application tools for the services you need now. Past home loan or education use does not automatically enroll you in every current VA benefit.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop if a site asks you to pay to unlock VA enrollment or benefits access.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the official VA.gov site

On a trusted browser, go to VA.gov directly. Avoid ads, texts, or popups that claim to enroll you faster for a fee.

You should see: You see the official U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

  2. Create or sign in with a verified account

Choose Sign in and complete Login.gov or ID.me identity verification with your personal information and documents as prompted.

You should see: You are signed into VA.gov with a verified identity.

  3. Choose the benefit you need now

From VA.gov, open the application for the current need, such as VA health care enrollment, disability compensation, or another listed benefit. Past loan or school use may not cover the new request.

You should see: You reach the correct online application or status page for that benefit.

  4. Submit and save confirmation details

Complete the form carefully, submit it, and save any confirmation number or status link. Check VA.gov messages for follow-up requests.

You should see: The application shows as submitted and you have a way to track status.

  5. Get help through official VA channels if blocked

If identity verification or the application fails, use VA.gov help or official VA phone support listed on the site rather than third-party paid services.

You should see: You have an official support path to finish enrollment or the application.

Extra tips

What to look for: The official VA.gov sign-in options, whether Login.gov or ID.me verification completes, and the specific benefit application for health care, disability, or other services.

Before you change anything: Use only VA.gov or links that begin from VA.gov. Have identity documents ready for Login.gov or ID.me verification. Write down which benefits you want, such as health care or disability. Never share Social Security numbers or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
