How do you change the phone number on an account when you do not know the current number?

Answer

Sign in with email or username if possible, open account or security settings to reveal a masked number, then use the service’s official identity verification or support path when the old number is unknown or no longer yours.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop if a site or popup asks you to pay to unlock the account or install unknown software.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in and find any masked number

Sign in on the official site or app, open Account, Profile, or Security settings, and look for a partially hidden phone number. Photograph or write down the last digits if shown.

You should see: You either recognize the masked number or confirm that no usable number is visible.

  2. Try email-based security options first

If the service allows, switch verification to email, an authenticator app, or a passkey before changing the phone number, following only the in-account prompts.

You should see: You regain a verification method you control without needing the unknown number.

  3. Use the official number-change or support request

Open Help or Contact support inside the official app/site and choose the phone-number or account-access category. If an automated assistant loops, look for “talk to a person,” email support, or an identity verification form and submit the ownership documents they request.

You should see: A support case or verification request is opened to replace the phone number on file.

  4. Secure the account after the number updates

When the new number is accepted, turn on two-factor authentication, review recent login activity, and change the password if you saw unfamiliar sessions.

You should see: The account lists your current number and new sign-ins require a code you can receive.

Extra tips

What to look for: A masked number such as (***) ***-1234 in account settings, prompts to text a code you never receive, and whether support chat keeps sending you to an automated agent instead of a number-change form.

Before you change anything: Try signing in with email or username on the official website or app. Gather proof of ownership such as the account email, recent receipts, or matching ID if the service asks. Do not use random “account unlock” services. Never share passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
