How do I fix a VTech phone that shows No Line and will not connect?

Answer

No Line on a VTech base usually means the phone cord is unplugged, in the wrong jack, or the wall jack has no dial tone. Checking the TEL LINE / LINE jack, testing the wall jack with a corded phone, then power-cycling the base and handsets often restores the line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug only phone and power cords; do not open the base or alter telephone wiring unless you are qualified.

Follow these steps

  1. Read the handset message

Check the handset screen for No Line, Not Registered, or Out of range or no power at base. Place the handset on the base or charger if it says Not Registered, then use FIND HS or HANDSET LOCATOR only if you are re-registering a handset.

You should see: You know whether the issue is line service at the base or handset registration.

  2. Check the phone cord into LINE

Confirm the phone cord is plugged into the base jack labeled TEL LINE or LINE, and the other end goes into the wall jack or the phone port on your modem/ONT. Do not use the DATA or unused Ethernet-style jack for the phone line.

You should see: The cord is firmly seated in LINE and the wall or modem phone port.

  3. Power-cycle the base and handsets

Unplug the phone line from the base, remove batteries from all handsets, wait about one minute, then reconnect power and the phone line. Put batteries back in and return handsets to the base to charge briefly.

You should see: No Line clears, or the same message returns after reboot.

  4. Test the wall jack with a corded phone

Plug a known-working corded phone into the same wall jack or modem phone port. Listen for dial tone. If the corded phone also has no dial tone, contact the phone or internet provider about the line; if it works, the VTech base or cord is likely at fault.

You should see: You can tell whether the jack has service or the cordless system needs repair or replacement.

Extra tips

What to look for: No Line on the handset or base, TEL LINE or LINE jack on the base, and whether a corded phone gets dial tone from the same wall jack

Before you change anything: Note the exact message on the handset (No Line, Not Registered, or Out of range). Find the phone cord from the base to the wall jack or modem phone port. Have a simple corded phone ready to test the jack if possible. Unplug only the phone line and power cords for this system—do not cut wires.
