What should I do if the Phone app disappears and an iPhone stops working?
Answer
If the Phone app vanished and the iPhone later shut down, start with a forced restart, then confirm the Phone app is not hidden or restricted. Separately check whether the carrier line still has voice service, because a missing Phone icon and a dead handset are different problems.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A forced restart does not erase data, but entering recovery and choosing Restore will erase the iPhone unless a backup is restored afterward.
Follow these steps
Charge, then force restart the iPhone
Leave the iPhone on a charger for several minutes. Then press Volume Up quickly, Volume Down quickly, and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (keep holding even if the power-off slider appears).
You should see: The Apple logo appears and the iPhone boots back to the Lock Screen.
Search for the Phone app
After unlock, swipe down on the Home Screen and search for “Phone.” Also check the App Library and any extra Home Screen pages. If Screen Time is used, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and confirm apps are not blocked.
You should see: The Phone app appears again, or you find a restriction that was hiding it.
Confirm the carrier line has voice service
From another phone, call your number. Also open the carrier’s app or account page (for example PureTalk) and check for outages, unpaid service, or a SIM/eSIM that is not active.
You should see: You know whether the problem is the iPhone software/hardware or the mobile line itself.
Update or recover if the phone stays unstable
If the iPhone stays on, go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any update. If it will not stay on or will not finish starting, use a computer with Finder (Mac) or Apple Devices/iTunes (Windows) and follow Apple’s recovery steps for that model.
You should see: The iPhone updates normally, or recovery mode gives a clear restore/update option.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the iPhone shows any Apple logo or battery screen, whether other apps still open, and whether the Phone app is missing only from the Home Screen or truly unavailable.
Before you change anything: Charge the iPhone for at least 15–30 minutes with a known-good cable and power adapter. Note the exact model if possible (for example iPhone 16 Pro). Avoid erasing the device until a backup is available and simpler restart steps are finished. Do not share Apple ID codes with unexpected callers.
