How do I fix a Samsung phone that will not connect to Kenwood Android Auto?

Answer

When an older phone works on the same Kenwood unit but a newer Samsung does not, the usual causes are a weak or data-only USB cable/port issue, Android Auto not allowed for that USB connection, or phone USB mode set wrong. Start by reseating a known-good data USB cable, allowing Android Auto prompts on the phone, then check USB preferences and Android Auto settings.

Follow these steps

  1. Reseat a known-good USB data cable

Unplug the phone, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in using the cable that already works with the older Samsung, or another USB-C cable rated for data (not charge-only). Try the Kenwood USB port used for Android Auto, not only a charge port if more than one exists.

You should see: The phone detects USB again and the unstable-cable warning is gone or less frequent.

  2. Allow Android Auto prompts on the phone

When the phone asks to allow Android Auto, USB debugging is not required for normal use—accept the Android Auto / USB accessory prompts. Open Android Auto settings on the phone and confirm the Kenwood or car connection is not blocked.

You should see: Android Auto permission is granted and the car connection attempt is allowed.

  3. Set the correct USB connection mode

Pull down the notification shade after plugging in and open the USB / charging notification. Choose File transfer / Android Auto (wording varies) instead of Charge only. Retry the connection.

You should see: The phone stays in a data-capable USB mode and Android Auto can start.

  4. Update Android Auto and clear a stuck session

In Google Play, update Android Auto. Then force-stop Android Auto, reconnect the USB cable, and try again. If the unstable-cable message continues on every cable, try another USB port or a short, thicker data cable before assuming the phone USB port is damaged.

You should see: Android Auto launches on the Kenwood screen, or you isolate the issue to cable/port hardware.

Extra tips

What to look for: A USB cable is unstable message, Android Auto connection prompts, and whether USB charging-only versus file transfer/Android Auto mode is selected.

Before you change anything: Confirm the Kenwood model supports wired Android Auto. Try the cable that already works with the older Samsung before buying a new one. Do not install Android Auto APKs from unknown sites. Never share account passwords or verification codes with unexpected callers.
