How do I dispute or reverse a small unexpected credit card charge?

Answer

Start by identifying the merchant on the card statement, then request a refund from that merchant. If the merchant will not help or the charge looks unauthorized, dispute it through your card issuer’s official app or website.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not share your full card number, CVV, or one-time passcodes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly about removing a charge.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify the merchant and charge status

Open your official card or bank app, find the $5 or similar charge, and note the merchant name, date, and whether it says Pending or Posted.

You should see: You know who billed the card and whether the charge can still change or cancel on its own.

  2. Check for a trial, tip, or linked subscription

Search your email and app subscriptions for that merchant name. Small charges are often verification holds, tips, delivery fees, or trial conversions.

You should see: You either recognize a legitimate charge or confirm it still looks wrong.

  3. Ask the merchant for a refund first

Contact the merchant through its official app, website, or support page and request a refund or cancellation explanation for the charge.

You should see: The merchant refunds the charge, explains it, or refuses with a clear reason.

  4. Dispute the charge with the card issuer if needed

If the merchant will not help, or the charge is unauthorized, open Dispute or Report a problem in your card issuer’s official app or website and submit the charge details.

You should see: The issuer opens a dispute case and tells you what happens next.

  5. Watch for the refund or temporary credit

Check the card account over the next statement cycle for a refund, temporary credit, or dispute update, and keep your notes until it is resolved.

You should see: The charge is reversed, credited, or clearly marked as under review.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact merchant name, amount, date, and whether the charge is pending or posted

Before you change anything: Save a screenshot or PDF of the charge from your card account. Confirm whether anyone in your household authorized a trial, tip, or small purchase. Use only the official bank or card app for disputes. Never share your full card number or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
