What should I do if someone asks for a small fee to reach a company representative?

Answer

A request for a small upfront fee just to reach a real company representative is a common scam pattern. Hang up or ignore the message, do not pay, and contact the company only through an official phone number or website you look up yourself.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Legitimate companies do not usually charge a small fee just to connect you to a representative through an unexpected call or message.
  • Stop immediately if a site or caller asks you to install remote-access software or pay with gift cards.

Follow these steps

  1. Stop the payment request

End the call or close the chat. Do not pay the five-dollar fee or any follow-up charge, even if the person claims it is refundable or required to connect you.

You should see: The conversation ends and no payment details are shared.

  2. Verify the company independently

Search for the company name yourself and open only the official website or listed support contact. Do not use phone numbers, links, or QR codes from the unexpected message.

You should see: You either find an official support channel or confirm that the contact you received was not from the company.

  3. Secure accounts if anything was shared

If you already shared a card number, password, or one-time code, contact your bank or card issuer, change the password on the affected account from an official site, and review recent transactions.

You should see: Any exposed payment method or account is locked down or monitored for unauthorized charges.

  4. Report the attempt

Report the scam attempt to your local consumer protection or fraud reporting channel, and to the platform where the message arrived if it came by text, email, or social media.

You should see: The attempt is documented and you have a record if similar contacts continue.

Extra tips

What to look for: Pressure to pay a small amount before talking to support, payment by gift card, crypto, wire, or unusual apps, and callers who refuse to let you hang up and call back through an official number.

Before you change anything: Do not send money, gift cards, or payment app transfers. Do not share bank, card, or one-time codes. Look up the company name on its official website yourself rather than using a number from the message. Stop if anyone asks for remote access to your computer or phone.
