How do I manage a credit freeze online when I forgot the PIN?

Answer

Use each credit bureau's official freeze page: sign in or create an account, then choose forgot PIN or verify your identity to place, lift, or manage the freeze. Live chat or phone support is usually reached from those same signed-in official sites when self-service stalls.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop if a site or caller asks you to pay a third party to unfreeze your credit or unlock an account.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the official freeze page

In a browser, go to the official Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax credit-freeze or security-freeze page by typing the company address yourself. Start with the bureau that is blocking you.

You should see: You reach a real bureau freeze or account page, not a lookalike site.

  2. Sign in or verify identity

Sign in if you already have a login. If not, create the free account the bureau requires, or choose verify identity / manage freeze without an existing account when that option appears.

You should see: You pass the bureau's identity checks or land in an account that can manage freezes.

  3. Use Forgot PIN if asked

If the site asks for a freeze PIN you do not have, select Forgot PIN or the identity-verification recovery path. Complete the prompts instead of guessing old PINs.

You should see: The freeze can be viewed, placed, or temporarily lifted without the original PIN.

  4. Repeat for each bureau as needed

Credit freezes are separate at each bureau. Repeat official sign-in and freeze management for Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax if you froze credit at more than one.

You should see: Each needed bureau shows the freeze status you want.

  5. Request live help from the signed-in account

If self-service still fails, use chat or contact options from inside the official logged-in help area. Ask specifically about freeze PIN recovery rather than calling numbers from web search ads.

You should see: You reach bureau support tied to your verified account, or you receive clear next steps for identity review.

Extra tips

What to look for: Official freeze or security-freeze pages, Forgot PIN or identity-verification options, and in-account chat or contact links after you sign in.

Before you change anything: Type each bureau website yourself; do not use links from unexpected texts. Have government ID and personal details ready for identity checks. Manage freezes yourself on official sites before paying anyone who claims they can escalate for a fee. Never share freeze PINs, passwords, or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
