How do I switch a Galaxy A16 5G to a new carrier with my own phone?

Answer

Most bring-your-own-phone switches fail because activation is incomplete, the SIM or eSIM is not detected, or the phone needs a short network refresh after the transfer. Restart the phone, confirm the SIM in Settings, then finish activation in the carrier’s official app or website.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the phone

Power the Galaxy A16 5G fully off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on so the new SIM profile can load cleanly.

You should see: The phone boots to the home screen and the carrier name or signal indicator appears in the status bar.

  2. Refresh the mobile connection

Open Settings, turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off so the phone re-registers on the network.

You should see: Mobile signal returns, or a clearer “no service” or activation message appears.

  3. Confirm the SIM is detected

Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager and confirm the new SIM or eSIM is listed and turned on.

You should see: The SIM shows as present and enabled for mobile data or calls.

  4. Finish carrier activation

Open the carrier’s official setup app or website, sign in to the account, and complete any remaining activation or number-transfer steps.

You should see: Activation shows as complete, or the carrier gives a clear status such as still processing.

  5. Verify the phone hardware identity

Open the Phone app, dial *#06#, and confirm an IMEI appears on screen.

You should see: An IMEI number is displayed, which usually means the phone hardware itself is responding normally.

Extra tips

What to look for: SIM status in Settings > Connections > SIM manager, a successful activation message in the carrier app, and an IMEI when dialing *#06#.

Before you change anything: Have the phone unlocked for the new carrier if required. Know the IMEI and account details for the line being transferred. Use only the carrier’s official app or website for activation. Do not pay unexpected fees or share account codes with anyone who contacts you unsolicited.
