How do I set up an eSIM on an iPhone?

Confirm the iPhone is carrier-unlocked, get an eSIM QR code or carrier app activation from your provider, then go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and follow the prompts. Restart and toggle Airplane Mode if the new line does not appear right away.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the iPhone can use a new carrier

    Open Settings > General > About and check the carrier lock status. If it says No SIM restrictions, the phone should accept a compatible carrier eSIM. If it is locked, contact the current carrier to unlock it first.

    You should see: You know whether the iPhone is unlocked before buying or scanning an eSIM.

  2. Get the eSIM from your carrier

    In your carrier’s official app or website, request eSIM activation for this iPhone and keep the QR code or on-screen install prompt ready. Do not reuse a QR code that was already installed on another phone unless the carrier says it can be reissued.

    You should see: You have a fresh eSIM install method from the carrier.

  3. Add the eSIM in Cellular settings

    Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, then scan the QR code or choose the carrier’s app transfer option. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi until activation finishes.

    You should see: iOS shows the new plan under Cellular and begins activating the line.

  4. Label the line and set defaults

    If asked, name the plan and choose which line to use for cellular data and default voice calls, especially if a physical SIM or another eSIM is already present.

    You should see: The correct line is selected for calls, texts, and data.

  5. Restart if the line does not appear

    Restart the iPhone. If the line still missing or shows No Service, turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, turn it off, then check Settings > General > About for a Carrier Settings update.

    You should see: The eSIM line shows signal or a carrier name and can place a test call.
