How do I open a digital safe when the battery is dead?

On most small safes the battery compartment is behind the keypad panel itself, which slides or twists off, or sits behind a cover on the front held by a clip. Many models also accept an external battery held against contacts under the keypad, and nearly all include an override key hidden behind a badge or panel on the front.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not drill or force the safe. It destroys the safe, may damage the contents, and can void any insurance on them.
- Avoid anyone offering to open a safe without asking for proof of ownership. Reputable locksmiths always ask.
- Once open, replace all batteries and test the code several times with the door open before closing it.
Follow these steps
Look for the override keyhole
Examine the front for a badge, logo plate, or small panel that prises or slides off. The emergency keyhole is usually behind one.
You should see: You expose a keyhole.
Find the override key
Check the handbook wallet, the original packaging, and anywhere important documents are kept.
You should see: You have the key that came with the safe.
Try the keypad panel for batteries
Try sliding the keypad panel upward or twisting it — on many small safes the battery holder is directly behind it.
You should see: The compartment opens and batteries can be replaced.
Look for external battery contacts
Check underneath or beside the keypad for two small metal contacts. Holding a 9-volt battery against them powers the keypad long enough to enter the code.
You should see: The keypad lights and accepts the code.
Call the manufacturer
If none of these work, contact the maker with the model and serial number and proof of ownership to request an override key or procedure.
