What should I do if my phone line is still down after a technician visit?

Answer

Sign in to your internet/phone provider account, check whether an outage or repair ticket is still open, and call official support with the technician’s visit date if the ticket shows complete but the line is dead. Ask for the repair status and a new appointment if outside-plant work was not finished.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not pay an unexpected caller who claims they can repair the outside line today for cash.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the ticket or outage status

Sign in to the provider account (for example CenturyLink/Lumen) and run the troubleshooter or repair-status view for your phone line.

You should see: You see an open repair, an outage ETA, or a closed ticket that does not match reality.

  2. Document what still fails

Confirm there is still no dial tone after a modem/phone reboot, and write down lights or error status plus the prior technician visit date.

You should see: You have a concise status to give support.

  3. Call official support to reopen or escalate

Contact the provider with the account address, visit date, and “outside line” notes. Ask whether cable repair is scheduled and request a callback when the ticket changes.

You should see: Support confirms an active dispatch or creates a new repair order.

  4. Ask for a clear completion check

Request that the ticket not be closed until dial tone is verified, and get a reference number for the escalation.

You should see: You have a reference number and expected next update.

Extra tips

What to look for: Open trouble ticket number, outage map status, and whether the portal says repaired while your dial tone is still gone.

Before you change anything: Note the technician name/date and what they said about an outside line issue. Use the provider’s official app or phone number on your bill. Do not let an unexpected caller “finish the repair” for a fee. Keep a second contact number available for callbacks.
