Accounts & Passwords

What should you do if Apple ID account recovery is stuck or the status page disappears?

Answer

Return to iforgot.apple.com with the same Apple ID, use a trusted browser, and look for email from Apple about recovery. Do not start over repeatedly if information is rejected—wait for the existing recovery or use account recovery help on a trusted device.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Ignore third parties who claim they can unlock an Apple ID for a fee.

Follow these steps

  1. Reopen iforgot with the same Apple ID

Go to iforgot.apple.com, enter the exact Apple ID, and follow prompts for an in-progress recovery rather than creating a brand-new request if offered.

You should see: You either see recovery status or a clear continue/start option.

  2. Check Apple recovery email

Search inbox and spam for messages from Apple about account recovery approval or next steps, then use only those official links.

You should see: You find a recovery update email or confirm none has arrived yet.

  3. Use a trusted device path if available

If another iPhone, iPad, or Mac is still signed into that Apple ID, change the password from Settings or System Settings there instead of waiting on recovery.

You should see: A password reset succeeds from the trusted device.

  4. Avoid repeated start-over loops

If the site says information is incorrect or offers start over, stop rapid retries and continue waiting on the original recovery window unless Apple email instructs otherwise.

You should see: You do not accidentally reset a recovery that was nearly complete.

Extra tips

What to look for: You requested Apple ID recovery more than a week ago and the iforgot status countdown page no longer appears.

Before you change anything: Use the exact Apple ID email or phone for the account. Check spam for Apple recovery messages. Avoid endless incorrect answer retries.
