Why can’t I make international calls on a VoIP service when the line otherwise works?
Answer
When only international calls fail on VoIP, the cause is often dialing format, an international-calling add-on that is off, or a destination route block—not a total outage.
Follow these steps
Confirm international calling is enabled
Sign into the official VoIP account portal and check whether international calling or the destination country is enabled and in good standing.
You should see: International service shows enabled, disabled, or restricted for that destination.
Retry with the correct international format
Place a test call using the format your provider documents, commonly 011 + country code + number from the US, or + country code from softphones.
You should see: The call connects, or you get a clearer intercept message about format or blocking.
Test from another device on the same account
If available, try the same destination from the provider’s softphone or web dialer to separate an ATA wiring issue from an account routing issue.
You should see: The failure follows the account, or only the adapter fails.
Reboot the adapter once after account checks
If the account shows international service online, reboot the ATA once, wait for it to register, and try one carefully formatted test call.
You should see: Registration returns and the international call either completes or fails the same way.
Contact the provider with call details
Open a support ticket with the exact dialed string, time of the attempt, and whether other countries work, and ask them to check destination routing.
You should see: Support confirms a route block, dialing fix, or account setting change.

Extra tips
What to look for: Domestic or on-net calls working while one international destination fails, plus any account page showing international service status.
Before you change anything: Note the exact number format you dialed, including any leading 011 or + prefix. Confirm whether other international destinations fail or only one country. Sign into the official VoIP account portal. Avoid posting full phone numbers in public forums.
