Why does a phone say it is not connected or registered on the network?

Answer

A “not connected” or “not registered on network” message usually means the SIM/eSIM is inactive, the phone is in airplane mode, or the carrier has not finished provisioning service. Checking airplane mode, confirming the SIM status, and restarting the phone after Wi-Fi calling settings are reviewed often restores registration.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only use your carrier’s official app, website, or published support number when refreshing a SIM or eSIM.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn airplane mode off and restart

Open Quick Settings or Settings, make sure Airplane mode is off, then restart the phone and wait about two minutes for signal bars to return.

You should see: The not-registered message clears, or the status stays the same so you can move to SIM checks.

  2. Confirm the SIM or eSIM is present and enabled

Go to the mobile network or SIM settings screen and confirm the SIM/eSIM is listed, enabled, and selected for calls. If you just switched carriers, wait for the carrier’s activation text or app confirmation.

You should see: The phone shows an active SIM/eSIM line instead of a missing or disabled line.

  3. Test with Wi-Fi calling or another network view

If Wi-Fi is available, temporarily enable Wi-Fi calling in the phone’s carrier settings to place a test call, and also check whether any network operator name appears in the status bar.

You should see: Either a Wi-Fi call connects, or you confirm the phone still cannot attach to any mobile network.

  4. Ask the carrier to refresh the line

Contact the carrier from another phone or chat on the official site/app and ask them to confirm the number is active and to refresh or resend the SIM/eSIM profile.

You should see: The carrier confirms provisioning is complete; after another restart the phone registers normally.

Extra tips

What to look for: Status bar icons showing no bars, airplane mode, emergency calls only, or a message similar to not registered on network.

Before you change anything: Confirm whether this is a new phone, a new SIM/eSIM, or an existing line that suddenly dropped. Note your carrier name and whether Wi-Fi still works. Avoid third-party “unlock” apps or unexpected callers asking for account codes.
