Why does an iPhone show SOS Only after switching carriers?

Answer

SOS Only usually means the iPhone can reach emergency services but is not fully registered on the new carrier’s network. Toggle Airplane Mode and cellular data, allow any carrier settings update from Settings > General > About, then install iOS updates and confirm the new plan’s eSIM or SIM is active.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • SOS Only still allows emergency calls in many areas, but it is not a substitute for a working cellular plan.
  • Do not share Apple ID passwords or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly about unlocking service.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, wait about 15 seconds, then turn it off and wait for the network to reconnect.

You should see: SOS Only clears and the new carrier name or signal bars appear, or the status updates after a short delay.

  2. Refresh cellular data

Go to Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data), turn Cellular Data off, wait several seconds, then turn it back on. If you have multiple lines, confirm the new carrier line is selected for data.

You should see: The iPhone attempts a fresh data registration on the active line.

  3. Check for a carrier settings update

Go to Settings > General > About and stay on that screen for about 30 seconds. If a Carrier Settings Update appears, install it.

You should see: Carrier settings update successfully, or About shows the new carrier without an update prompt.

  4. Install available iOS updates

Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update, then restart the iPhone when finished.

You should see: The phone runs the latest available iOS build and retries network registration after reboot.

  5. Confirm the SIM or eSIM with the carrier

In Settings > Cellular, verify the new plan appears and is turned on. If SOS Only remains, contact the new carrier to re-provision the eSIM or replace the physical SIM, and ask them to confirm the IMEI is allowed on their network.

You should see: The carrier refreshes the line or issues a new eSIM/SIM and normal service returns.

Extra tips

What to look for: Status bar text such as SOS or SOS Only, whether Cellular shows your new carrier name, and any Carrier Settings Update prompt under Settings > General > About.

Before you change anything: Confirm the new carrier says the line is active and the correct phone number is assigned. Note whether you are using a physical SIM or eSIM from the new carrier. Stay somewhere with known cellular coverage while testing. Do not erase the iPhone as a first step; network toggles and carrier updates usually come first.
