Why does home phone voicemail stop working after a fiber internet install?
Answer
When a home phone is migrated to fiber, the phone service usually switches to a digital (VoIP) line, and voicemail often needs to be reactivated or set up again through the new provider's system. Calling the voicemail access number from the home phone and re-recording the greeting usually restores it.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Voicemails stored on the old system are often deleted during a service migration and usually cannot be recovered, so save any important messages before the old service is fully closed.
- Only manage the account through the provider's official website, app, or published support number. Ignore unsolicited calls offering to "fix" the voicemail, and never share account passwords or verification codes.
Follow these steps
Confirm the phone line has dial tone
Pick up the home phone and listen for a dial tone. If there is none, check that the phone cable is plugged into the phone (TEL/POTS) port on the new fiber gateway, not into an old wall jack that is no longer connected.
You should see: A normal dial tone is heard when the handset is lifted.
Dial the voicemail access number
From the home phone, dial the provider's voicemail access code — commonly *98, or dial the home number itself. Follow the prompts to set a PIN and record a greeting if the system says the mailbox is new.
You should see: The voicemail system answers and either plays messages or walks through first-time setup.
Test voicemail with another phone
Call the home number from a mobile phone and let it ring without answering until voicemail should pick up, usually after four to six rings.
You should see: The call goes to the newly set up voicemail greeting.
Check the account's voicemail feature
Sign in to the provider's official website or app and confirm voicemail is listed as an active feature on the phone plan. If it is missing, the installer may not have carried it over, and it can usually be re-added at no charge.
You should see: Voicemail shows as enabled on the account, or it is added and becomes active shortly after.

Extra tips
What to look for: Callers reach a generic greeting, voicemail never picks up, or the voicemail access number reports the mailbox is not set up — starting right after the fiber installation.
Before you change anything: Note any saved voicemails you need, since messages on the old system may not transfer. Confirm which company now provides the phone service after the install. Check that the home phone has a dial tone before troubleshooting voicemail.
