Why does my voicemail greeting have static or a missing message?
Answer
Re-record the greeting from a quiet phone on a strong connection first; a corrupted greeting file often causes static even when older saved messages still sound fine.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deleting the entire mailbox can erase saved messages; re-record the greeting first.
Follow these steps
Confirm what callers hear
Call your number from another phone and listen to whether the greeting is static, truncated, or missing.
You should see: You confirm the greeting problem versus a general audio issue.
Switch to the default greeting temporarily
In the voicemail menu, choose the default system greeting if available, then place another test call.
You should see: The default greeting plays clearly, or it also has static.
Re-record the custom greeting
Record a new greeting in a quiet room, speak at a normal pace, save it, and test again with a call from another phone.
You should see: The new greeting plays without static.
Contact the phone provider if default audio is also bad
If even the default greeting is distorted, contact the phone provider or phone-system administrator to check the mailbox on the network side.
You should see: The provider resets the mailbox greeting storage or finds a line issue.

Extra tips
What to look for: Static only on the greeting, clear playback of saved messages, and prompts such as This is a test greeting during re-recording
Before you change anything: Call your number from another phone to hear the greeting yourself. Note whether saved messages still play clearly. Have a quiet place ready to re-record. Do not delete all mailboxes until the greeting is tested.
