Why does TV volume keep fading in and out?

Answer

This is usually caused by an audio setting like volume leveling or automatic volume control, a loose cable connection, or a streaming device that needs a restart, rather than a hardware failure.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug equipment from the wall, not just turn it off, when power cycling to fully reset it.
  • Avoid interrupting a software update in progress on the TV or streaming device, since this can cause other problems.

Follow these steps

  1. Power cycle the TV

Unplug the TV from the wall for a full 10 minutes, then plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip.

You should see: The TV turns back on normally after being plugged back in.

  2. Restart the streaming device

Open the streaming device's settings menu and choose the restart option, then wait for it to fully reboot.

You should see: The streaming device shows its home screen again after restarting.

  3. Check cable connections

Confirm that the HDMI or audio cables between the TV, sound bar, and streaming device are firmly plugged in at both ends.

You should see: All cables sit snugly in their ports with no visible looseness.

  4. Turn off automatic volume or leveling settings

Open the TV's sound settings and turn off any option labeled volume leveling, auto volume, or similar, then test the volume again.

You should see: The volume stays steady during playback after the setting is turned off.

  5. Re-run the audio setup for connected equipment

If using a sound bar or receiver, open the streaming device or TV's equipment control settings and re-run the audio setup so it matches your current equipment.

You should see: The setup wizard completes and volume behaves normally afterward.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the volume fades during specific content only, or across everything played on the TV, including live TV and different streaming apps.

Before you change anything: Check whether the fading happens with all sources or only one streaming app. Confirm the TV and any sound bar or receiver are connected with secure cables. Confirm you are using the official remote and settings menu for your TV or streaming device. Avoid unplugging equipment during a firmware update.
