Why is my iPhone 16e charging slowly and losing battery quickly?

Answer

Slow charging on an iPhone 16e is usually caused by a low-power charger or cable, heat, debris in the port, or battery settings—not always a defective battery. Use a 20W or higher USB-C wall adapter, check Battery Health & Charging, and review high-drain apps.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not insert metal objects deep into the charging port; that can damage connectors.
  • Damaged cables or counterfeit chargers can overheat—stop using them if they feel unsafe.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Battery Health & Charging

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and note Maximum Capacity, Optimized Battery Charging, and any charge limit.

You should see: You can see whether settings or battery health explain part of the behavior.

  2. Review which apps use the most power

In Settings > Battery, scroll the usage list and identify apps using large percentages of battery. Close or limit background activity for heavy users if needed.

You should see: You know whether one app is driving most of the drain.

  3. Charge from a wall outlet

Unplug from any computer or powered hub. Connect the iPhone directly to a wall outlet with a USB-C power adapter.

You should see: Charging speed improves, or Settings no longer warns about a slow charger.

  4. Use a stronger USB-C adapter and cable

Use a USB-C adapter rated about 20W or higher with a good USB-C cable. Leave the phone idle for 15–20 minutes with the case removed.

You should see: The battery percentage rises more quickly than before.

  5. Inspect and clear the charging port

With the phone powered on and dry, look into the USB-C port for lint. Gently remove debris with a non-metal soft tool such as a wooden or plastic pick—do not force metal objects inside.

You should see: The cable seats firmly and charging is more consistent.

  6. Watch for heat while charging

If the phone gets hot, pause heavy use, remove the case, and move it to a cooler spot. Heat often slows charging on purpose.

You should see: The phone cools and charging resumes at a more normal rate.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Slow Charger message in Settings > Battery, Battery Health & Charging status, hot device while charging, and lint in the USB-C port.

Before you change anything: Have a USB-C wall adapter (ideally 20W or higher) and a known-good USB-C cable. Charge in a cool place with the case removed for the test. Avoid unknown "battery booster" apps. Do not poke metal objects deep into the charging port.
