EmailAccounts & Passwords

How can I access my Gmail emails if I forgot the password?

Answer

Use Google’s official account recovery flow and keep choosing Try another way until a phone, trusted device, or recovery email option appears. Avoid guessing many wrong passwords, which can slow recovery.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop if a site or popup asks you to pay to unlock Gmail or install unknown software.
  • Too many wrong password attempts can delay recovery, so pause instead of guessing repeatedly.

Follow these steps

  1. Start Google account recovery

On a browser, go to Google’s sign-in page, enter the Gmail address, then choose Forgot password. Prefer a computer or another device if the phone you usually use is the one locked out.

You should see: Google shows password reset or identity verification options instead of the normal password field.

  2. Use Try another way

If the first option does not work, keep choosing Try another way until Google offers a text or call to a recovery phone, a prompt on a signed-in device, or a code sent to a recovery email.

You should see: You reach a verification method you still control.

  3. Complete verification and set a new password

Approve the device prompt or enter the code Google sends, then create a new strong password you will store somewhere safe.

You should see: You can sign in to Gmail and see your mail again.

  4. If recovery options are missing

Answer Google’s recovery questions as accurately as you can, including recent passwords or when the account was created. If recovery still fails, wait and try again later from a familiar device and location rather than using unknown paid unlock sites.

You should see: Either access is restored, or it is clear that Google needs more proof and unofficial unlock services should be avoided.

Extra tips

What to look for: Screens that say Forgot password, Try another way, or offer a phone number, device prompt, or recovery email code.

Before you change anything: Use only the official Google sign-in or account recovery pages typed yourself or opened from google.com. Stop after a few wrong password guesses so the account is not temporarily locked. Have your recovery phone or another signed-in device nearby if you still have one. Never share your password or verification codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
